WALTER STEWART

 

Walter Stewart became the Director of Business Development for SGI in Canada and Co-ordinator of SGI’s Global Grid Strategy in July 2002.  For the two years before, Walter was SGI Director of Global Marketing for Research and Education. From 1997- 2000 he was Manager of Market Development for Education and Research for SGI Canada. Walter works to develop SGI business in Canada in all sectors in the areas of high performance computing, high performance visualisation, and networked collaborative intelligence.  Globally, Walter co-ordinates SGI’s drive for The Grid.

 

In Canada, Walter serves as Past-Chair of the CANARIE Board, after a term as Chair, as a board member of the Canadian Mathematics Society, as a member of the Canadian Content On-Line Standards Sub-Committee, as a member of the College of Reviewers of the Canada Research Chairs, and as a member of the Long Range Planning Advisory Committee of C3.CA.  Internationally, Walter is a member of the Leadership Council of the Grid Market Awareness Committee of Global Grid Forum.  He serves as co-chair of the program committee of GGF.

 

Before joining SGI, Walter was the second president of SMART Toronto.  Prior to SMART Toronto, Walter was the Dean of Communications and Development at Centennial College.  He played a major role in the development of the Bell Centre for Creative Communications -one of North America’s pre-eminent centres for multi-media training. Walter has taught and been an educational administrator in British Columbia, the central Arctic, Japan, and Ontario.  He holds an honours degree in history from Simon Fraser University and a Masters Degree in Adult Education from the University of British Columbia.

 

Walter speaks at conferences around the world, often on the subject of learning in a digital world, on the impact of replacement reality, and on the importance of cyberinfrastructure for research and development.  He rejoices in the return of the age of the generalist
