The Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network (SHARCNET)

 

Gary Molenkamp, B.A. M.Sc, is a Systems and Network Administrator for The Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network (SHARCNET), a multi-institutional High Performance Computing (HPC) institute based at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada. 

 

Gary is responsible for ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of SHARCNET systems at Western, including the maintenance and administration of nearly 300 distributed parallel processors, the management of a user base of 700+ users across the SHARCNET community, and the leader of SHARCNET staff in the beta testing of pre-market software products such as LSF, RMS and HP’s XC architecture.  He is an active contributor to the Open Source Community.

 

In 2001, Gary developed the environment for HPC research at Western, including the management of Canada’s first Alpha Linux clusters.  In 2003, he designed and is currently implementing the WAN that will integrate SHARCNET’s 11 partner institutions via the ORION network.

 

Gary holds an Honours and a Master of Science in Computer Science from The University of Western Ontario, and has been published in several international periodicals, including the Journal of Medical Informatics.
