DEALING WITH INSECURITY ISSUES IN A CYBER WORLD
Cyber security is hard, or at least
balanced cyber
security is. Perfect cyber security: turn off the computer.
Unfortunately, that’s not very useful. Everyone agrees that realistic cyber security
is a growing problem but no one agrees on how to effectively solve it. Some
would argue it’s a technology problem that requires technological solutions.
Others would say it’s a failure of process and is best solved with improved
processes. And, unfortunately, a growing set of users are rapidly resigning
themselves to a perceived choice of either using computing insecurely and
productively, or using a secure
computing environment that is often counterproductive, generally
out of date, and always difficult to use. With new technology trends like cloud computing on
the horizon, there are very important questions about how cyber security is
going to play. Is security going to overly constrain the productivity of these
highly useful but likely very dangerous technologies? Or is there hope that
cyber security will find the solutions within these technologies without
perceived constraint? Looking forward, can we find that balance of security and
usability in our computing environments? A diverse panel of cyber experts with
different viewpoints will consider the current state of cyber security and its
future impact on emergent
technologies, user need and perception.
