"But
why not industry?"
Petaflop computers provide tremendous capabilities that unfortunately seem far
removed from the routine development of new products and processes. Several excellent studies on simulation-based
engineering have documented opportunities and challenges for the U.S. federal
government, national laboratories, and universities. Industrial recommendations have included incentives for R&D
investment, but do not address several of the systemic impediments to the
widespread use of high performance computing in industrial modeling and
simulation. Based upon actual
experience, several issues and opportunities for more widespread industrial application
will be discussed
