Exciting Advances in Telecommunications

Once upon at time (around 2001), in what seems to be almost another century (if you think in terms of Internet time), the pundits exclaimed that Internet traffic and demand would explode and the network as we know it would soon crash and burn. We all know what happened…essentially nothing except broken telecommunication companies and equipment vendors.  This talk is an update of what is going on today and a look into the future that shows that we are now in a trend of explosive network growth and significant challenges to "keep up" are upon us.  Examples of why this is true, what technologies are being used, and a brief exploration of this impact on the High-Performance Computing community will be explored.
