Grid
Computing: The Convergence of High-Performance Computing (HPC)
and Mainstream Computing
Grid is already well established in the academic and scientific
communities, and is beginning to develop significant enterprise momentum in
areas such as finance, life sciences, manufacturing as well as other
industries; however, many of these implementations are mostly centered around HPC or batch applications and not necessarily targeted
for general business computing functions. Is it possible for the HPC and
general business computing worlds to constructively collide and develop a
common base for standards, as well as share an ecosystem of HW and SW solutions
and building blocks; or, will these worlds pass each other like ships in the
dark? This panel of well known grid computing experts will address the
pros and cons of such a convergence and what it will take for wide-spread
commercial adoption of Grid and make it a win-win for all.
